Uruguay's largest state-owned commercial bank, founded in 1896, and the dominant financial institution in the country by customer base, lending, and deposits. BROU operates 124 branches across Uruguay plus international offices in Buenos Aires and New York. The bank's neoclassical headquarters at Cerrito 351 in Ciudad Vieja, Montevideo, was originally designed by Italian architect Giovanni Veltroni in 1866.
