About ICRC Iraq Delegation
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has maintained a presence in Iraq since the 1980s and operates one of its largest global delegations from Baghdad. The ICRC Iraq legal team focuses on international humanitarian law (IHL), protection of civilians and detainees, and dialogue with parties to armed conflict regarding their obligations under the Geneva Conventions. Legal advisors also work on missing persons and forensic identification programs, support to Iraq's national IHL committee, and integration of IHL into Iraqi military training. The delegation covers all of Iraq from offices in Baghdad, Erbil, Najaf, Basra, Mosul, and Kirkuk, offering unique exposure to humanitarian law in a complex operational environment.
