Iceland is a small, prosperous Nordic civil-law jurisdiction with most legal activity concentrated in Reykjavik. Lawyers work in private firms, in-house at banks and businesses, in government, and in the courts. The profession distinguishes between holders of a law degree (logfraedingur) and licensed advocates (logmenn) who are entitled to appear before the courts.
Complete a law degree (a roughly five-year programme to candidatus juris / master's level, e.g. at the University of Iceland or an equivalent institution), then undertake mandatory practical legal training/apprenticeship and pass the bar examination. On success you obtain a district-court advocate licence and join Logmannafelag Islands; a further qualification (Supreme Court advocate, hæstaréttarlögmaður) is needed to appear before the higher courts (the Court of Appeal, Landsrettur, and the Supreme Court).

To become a lawyer in Iceland, complete a full law degree (around five years, to candidatus juris / master's level), most commonly at the University of Iceland. You then carry out mandatory practical training and pass the bar examination administered under the Ministry of Justice framework. Once you obtain a district-court advocate licence (heradsdomslogmadur), you must join Logmannafelag Islands (the Icelandic Bar Association). Appearing before the Court of Appeal (Landsrettur) and Supreme Court requires an additional, higher qualification (Supreme Court advocate).
Logmannafelag Islands (the Icelandic Bar Association) regulates licensed advocates and maintains the public register of practitioners; the licence (rights of audience) is issued by the Ministry of Justice, and all licensed advocates must belong to the Bar Association.
