Job Description

The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The New York City Police Department strives to foster a safe and fair city through the strategic deployment of resources, focusing on both crime prevention and addressing quality-of-life concerns while building lasting community relationships.

The Legal Bureau serves as in-house counsel to the Department and assists members of the service in interpreting local, state, and federal laws. The Bureau represents the Department in a variety of civil matters, produces records and video footage to external oversight bodies and for litigation, reviews and negotiates complex contracts and memoranda of understanding, and assesses Department policies, practices, procedures, and forms for legal sufficiency and conformance with the law.

The New York City Police Department's Police Action Litigation Section assists the NYC Law Department in the defense of litigation against the City, the Police Department, and individual members of the service, where such litigation arises from police enforcement action. The Section functions as the primary liaison to the NYC Law Department to reduce financial exposure for the City and the Department, all of which impacts the success of the Department's primary law enforcement mission. The Section's objective is to increase the effectiveness of the Departments' law enforcement actions while decreasing its civil liability.

The selected candidate will perform the duties of an Attorney Agency III, which include, but are not limited to:
- Manage and coordinate electronic discovery (eDiscovery) matters, including the identification, preservation, collection, processing, review, and production of electronically stored information (ESI) in connection with litigation, investigations, and other legal matters.
- Coordinate and respond to subpoenas, court orders, and other legal demands for NYPD records and electronically stored information, ensuring timely, accurate, and legally compliant productions
- Collaborate with NYPD attorneys, information technology personnel, and outside counsel/vendors to develop efficient eDiscovery workflows, implement legal holds, and ensure compliance with discovery and preservation obligations.
- Utilize and oversee eDiscovery platforms and technology-assisted review tools to search, review, redact, organize, and produce large volumes of electronic records while maintaining confidentiality, data integrity, and defensible discovery practices.
