As the Assistant General Counsel for HR Risk & Compliance, you'll help shape workplace strategy and mitigate levels of risk as you partner with HR and business leaders on complex employment-related legal matters across the insurance platform.Strategic Partnership & Influence
- Works closely with the business leaders and HR teams to provide legal advice and in-depth execution on employment-related and immigration law matters impacting employees of Markel’s insurance-based businesses. As needed, provides counsel to leaders and employees of Markel Group and other US-based Markel companies.
- Leads the US-facing employee relations function for Markel's insurance-based businesses; responsible for managing a Senior Employee Relations Manager.
- Leads complex, sensitive investigations and communicates with employees regarding employee relations concerns; provides guidance and recommendations to managers for resolution of issues.
- Partners with HR leaders in the planning and execution of business restructuring projects both within and outside the US.
Compliance & Regulatory Counsel
- Counsels managers and employees on concerns related to applicable Equal Employment Opportunity laws including Title VII, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, and other similar federal and state laws
- Maintains, develops, recommends, and implements company policies related to performance, discipline, and other employment-related policies.
- Advises senior leaders and HR in understanding and implementing company policies related to performance, discipline, and related topics.
- Represents Markel in mediation/arbitration hearings related to employment matters; additionally, in this lead role, represents Markel on employment-related inquires and data requests initiated by external government agencies such as the DOL, EEOC, and other agencies as necessary.
- Serves as Secretary of the Employee Benefit Plan Committee and is responsible for recording and distributing accurate meeting minutes and maintaining accurate records for this and similar committees.
Risk Mitigation
- Provides leadership on all HR risk management matters; serves as a key risk management contact for HR compliance matters and regularly partners with the Global Security Services function.
- Provides regular assessments summarizing the HR’s risk and control environment and recommends/drafts updated policies and processes to HR leadership team to mitigate compliance risk.
- Manages and provides oversight to HQ physical security team.
Qualifications
- JD required; Masters or Bachelor’s degree in a related field (HR) preferred
- Active member in good standing of the Bar of Virginia, Texas, New York, or Illinois
- 10+ years’ broad expertise in US employment law, to include familiarity with labor law, executive compensation, employee benefit, taxation issues related to executive compensation, design and negotiation of executive compensation agreements, and privacy legislation
- Broad HR compliance knowledge to identify, understand and mitigate levels of HR risk globally
- Possess a broad and comprehensive understanding of multiple HR disciplines and of various policies and standards (i.e., recruiting, training and development, employee relations, HR business partner, compensation and benefits, payroll)
- Proven experience engaging business leaders by providing pragmatic advice on a variety of matters while carefully balancing the independent requirements of the function
- Strong written and verbal communication skills so as to influence internal function leaders, managers and employees as well as external audiences including regulators and auditors
- Experience navigating complex employment and labor matters in a global, multi-national company preferred

Pay information:
The salary range for this position is $152,600 - $318,000. The posted salary range reflects the lowest and highest base salary applicable to this role across our U.S. locations. Individual offers are determined based on geographic location, experience, qualifications, internal equity, and other job-related factors. As a result, the salary offered for a specific location will fall within a narrower range than the overall range displayed in this posting. This position may also be eligible to participate in the Company's annual incentive plan.
