Xcel Energy supports a hybrid work model to enable collaboration and flexibility. Many roles are expected to work onsite three days per week (Tuesday–Thursday); however, work location expectations vary based on role, team, and business needs.

 

Provides legal counsel to Xcel Energy and management of Xcel Energy legal services, including outside counsel. Handles complex legal matters on a regular basis, oftentimes requiring creative solutions to challenging legal issues. Viewed as an expert within the company and legal community in designated practice area.

The role is intended to add senior legal capacity for data center, large-load, generation, and other capital growth-driven infrastructure work across operating companies and jurisdictions. The Real Estate AGC will provide senior legal support for accelerated infrastructure growth by helping secure and manage the property rights, land use approvals, transactional documents, and related legal strategy needed to enable timely development, construction, operation, and long-term management of company facilities and new large load customers. The attorney will serve as a strategic legal partner to project-development teams.

Essential Responsibilities

• Provides leadership and counsel to Xcel Energy management on complex legal, business, legislation, regulation and strategic matters.
• Prepares contracts, pleadings, briefs and other documents for business transactions or legal proceedings.
• Represents Xcel Energy in courts, regulatory agencies and other adjudicatory or adversarial proceedings.
• May serve in a lead role to provide overall practice expertise and direction of attorneys within area of expertise. May act as primary point of contact for business areas.

Minimum Requirements

- Juris Doctorate degree from ABA accredited law school.

- Licensed to practice, or able to be licensed to practice on reciprocity within a reasonable timeframe of accepting the position, where the position is located.

- 10+ years of practice in corporate law department, law firm, government practice or equivalent legal experience. Leadership experience required.

Preferred Requirements:

• Significant experience advising on complex real estate, land use, infrastructure, energy, utility, project-development, or large capital project matters.
• Demonstrated ability to independently manage complex legal matters involving multiple stakeholders, compressed timelines, business risk, and strategic judgment.
• Experience with real property transactions, title review, easements, leases, acquisitions, dispositions, access rights, survey issues, encumbrances, and long-term property management considerations.
• Familiarity with land use permitting, local government processes, public hearings, community-relations considerations, and utility infrastructure siting.
• Experience with condemnation, eminent domain, property disputes, or litigation strategy is preferred, particularly in the utility or infrastructure context.
• Experience supporting electric, gas, renewable energy, transmission, distribution, data center, large-load, or other infrastructure development is strongly preferred.
• Ability to provide practical, business-focused legal advice.
• Strong drafting, negotiation, communication, project-management, and executive-advisory skills.
• Demonstrated commitment to collaboration, knowledge sharing, process improvement, budget stewardship, and development of scalable legal support models.

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $206,000.00 to $242,000.00 per year
