Position Summary...
Walmart is seeking a dynamic, business-forward, and collaborative attorney to serve as Counsel – Marketplace Payments within the Financial Services Legal team. Walmart Marketplace is a high-growth, strategic eCommerce business that enables third-party sellers to seamlessly reach Walmart’s massive global customer base and dramatically expand assortment while delivering a best-in-class shopping experience.This role will support the development and expansion of Marketplace financial services and payments capabilities, including sales-based financing (merchant cash advances), third-party financing programs, billing and credit risk product development, secured transactions, international payments processing, and a broad range of other payment-related initiatives. The role will be located at our Home Office in Bentonville, AR, or the Walmart E-Commerce Offices in Sunnyvale, CA or San Bruno, CA.
The position requires strong regulatory experience, excellent judgment, a self-starting attitude, and the ability to partner effectively with product, engineering, compliance, finance, operations, and leadership teams. The ideal candidate will bring a proven track record of cross-functional collaboration in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
What you'll do...
- Provide frontline legal support for financial services activities and products made available to Sellers, including sales-based financing (merchant cash advances) and commercial lending products as well as domestic and cross-border payments platforms and settlement processes.
- Counsel teams on U.S. and international money remittance and transmission laws, NACHA and card network rules, AML/CTF rules, OFAC/sanctions requirements, and other payments regulatory issues.
- Draft, review, and negotiate agreements with capital providers and sponsor banks, payments processors, and other payment infrastructure or commercial-finance partners.
- Partner with Product and Engineering teams to incorporate legal, regulatory, and risk considerations into product development, operational design, and platform mechanics.
- Support commercial and operational planning related to liability frameworks, returns and chargebacks, collections and advance-recovery strategies, and risk controls.
- Collaborate with technology teams to evaluate and advise on agentic marketplace e-commerce initiatives, including the integration of AI agents in payment platforms, credential tokenization, digital wallets, data management and sharing, and the identification and mitigation of associated risks.
- Develop guidance documents, playbooks, and policies to support Marketplace payments operations, financing programs, and compliance framework rollout.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Compliance, Ethics, Privacy, Finance/Treasury, Risk, Technology, and other groups to support product launches, seller financing programs, and internal training for the Marketplace ecosystem.
- Engage and manage outside counsel for specialized regulatory matters, licensing, commercial finance regulatory issues, and other complex legal issues.
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school; licensed and in good standing in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
- 4+ years of legal practice experience focused in commercial banking law, payments processing, fintech/financial services, or lending/advance products.
- Strong understanding of U.S. payments regulations, lending and loan brokering laws, AML/CTF, NACHA regulations and credit card network rules, deposit-taking, and commercial finance regulatory frameworks.
- Demonstrated experience negotiating and drafting complex commercial agreements, and managing complex legal matters across multiple jurisdictions.

The annual salary range for this position is $110,000.00 - $220,000.00 Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. Additional compensation for certain positions may also include :
