Job Description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Director, Privacy Legal based in the United States.

This is a senior legal leadership opportunity for an experienced privacy attorney to oversee a global privacy legal function and help shape a mature, scalable privacy compliance program. You will serve as the primary legal subject matter expert on privacy and data protection, advising teams across a complex, product-driven technology environment. The role combines strategic counseling, regulatory engagement, policy development, and hands-on partnership with product and engineering teams. You will help embed privacy requirements into products, systems, and business processes while ensuring compliance with evolving global regulations. The position also offers the opportunity to build strong relationships with regulators and industry bodies and influence privacy practices both internally and externally. Success in this role requires sound legal judgment, strong communication skills, and the ability to operate pragmatically in a fast-changing, high-impact environment.

Accountabilities:

    • Lead the Legal team's support for a global privacy compliance program, providing practical guidance on privacy and data protection obligations across the United States, European Union, and other applicable jurisdictions.
    • Develop, implement, and maintain privacy policies, legal processes, controls, and compliance frameworks aligned with regulatory requirements and industry standards.
    • Partner closely with product, engineering, security, and technical teams to integrate privacy requirements and controls into products, platforms, and internal systems.
    • Lead responses to formal and informal inquiries from government authorities and regulators, including negotiations, disclosures, and privacy compliance readiness initiatives.
    • Act as the senior legal subject matter expert for privacy and data protection, ensuring consistent, user-focused privacy counseling across the broader legal function.
    • Advise cross-functional teams on potential privacy and security issues, investigations, and compliance requirements, balancing legal risk with business and product objectives.
    • Build and maintain productive relationships with regulators, industry organizations, and other relevant external stakeholders, particularly across Europe.
    • Serve as a strategic and pragmatic legal partner, promoting privacy awareness and responsible data practices across the organization.
    • Lead, mentor, and develop high-performing legal team members within a dynamic and inclusive environment.
    • Requirements:

      • Juris Doctor (JD), LLB, LLM, or equivalent law degree, with active legal qualification in the relevant jurisdiction; experience across multiple jurisdictions is highly valued.
      • 12+ years of legal experience gained at a leading law firm and/or in-house, including at least 5 years of substantial in-house privacy and/or product counseling experience.
      • Demonstrated experience designing, implementing, and managing effective privacy compliance programs within a fast-paced, technology or product-focused organization.
      • Strong knowledge of global privacy and data protection laws, regulatory expectations, and industry frameworks relevant to technology platforms and consumer-facing products.
      • Proven experience engaging with government authorities and regulators and responding to privacy-related inquiries, with significant European regulatory experience preferred.
      • Excellent legal drafting and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex legal concepts into concise, practical, plain-English guidance.
      • Experience managing, mentoring, and developing strong legal professionals in a collaborative and inclusive environment.
      • Strong judgment, high emotional intelligence, and a proactive, solutions-oriented approach to legal counseling.
      • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across time zones and with engineers, product managers, legal colleagues, and senior stakeholders.
      • Ability to work independently in an ambiguous, rapidly evolving environment while balancing legal risk, business priorities, product considerations, and user interests.
      • Experience advising on consumer data privacy, embedding privacy requirements into consumer-facing or advertising technology products, working with global regulators, and contributing to enterprise-wide privacy programs or compliance platforms is highly valued.
      • Benefits:

        • Base salary range of $299,200–$418,800 USD, depending on level, experience, skills, and relevant qualifications.
        • Equity eligibility through restricted stock units.
        • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision healthcare coverage.
        • Income replacement and other insurance programs.
        • 401(k) plan with employer matching.
        • Flexible vacation and paid volunteer time off.
        • Generous paid parental leave.
        • Family planning support.
        • Gender-affirming care.
        • Mental health and coaching benefits.
        • Global benefits supporting workspace needs, professional development, and caregiving.
        • Remote work within the United States.
        • Equal opportunity employment and reasonable accommodations throughout the hiring process.
