Job Description
The Water Resources Department is excited to offer a hiring bonus for individuals newly hired as Electrical Controls Specialist I's and II's, who may be eligible for a $3,500 incentive at the conclusion of Initial City Probation. 聽To receive the bonus, a new hire must work as an Electrical Controls Specialist for one year and receive a successful performance evaluation. 聽聽
The first review of applications will be Monday, April 20, 2026, then weekly thereafter until all vacancies are filled.
There are multiple vacancies that may be filled at either the Specialist I or Specialist II level.聽
Electrical Controls Specialist I ($65,880.88 - $92,983.49 annually)
Under close supervision, an Electrical Controls Specialist I performs or assists Electrical Controls Specialist II with Electrical/Instrumentation installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair work related to electrical equipment up to 15kv and instrumentation equipment used to operate and monitor the City's water, wastewater, and gas systems. 聽Duties include: 聽installing, programming, calibrating, and commissioning various electrical/instrumentation devices, including variable frequency drives, level transmitters, flow meters, radios, and power monitoring equipment; assisting in the startup, commissioning, and troubleshooting of the process control system, including correcting problems with communications and field process variables; coordinating and acquiring materials and equipment to repair or install at facilities; performing calibration and verification for the Arizona Corporation Commission on gas regulator stations; and certifying calibration for Inter-Agency flow meters. 聽Incumbents must be willing to work overtime as required. 聽An employee in this class is required to use appropriate safety equipment and follow safety procedures in accordance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 70E. 聽This class performs related duties as required.聽
This class may involve hazardous conditions typically associated with voltages up to 15kv, natural gas, raw sewage, toxic chemicals, laser beams, and confined work areas. 聽This class is distinguished from the Electrical Controls Specialist II by the latter鈥檚 responsibility for performing, under limited supervision or independently, skilled Electrical/Instrumentation work on equipment used to operate and monitor the City鈥檚 water, wastewater, and gas systems. 聽Employees in this class may progress by noncompetitive promotion to Electrical Controls Specialist II upon meeting the specific criteria-based promotion requirements of experience, training, and performance. 聽The Electrical Controls Specialist I receives close supervision and safety guidance from an Electrical Controls Supervisor while also receiving direction from an Electrical Controls Specialist II who reviews completed work practices for safety conformance and compliance. 聽The Specialist II will also assist and instruct the Specialist I on installation, maintenance, repairs, specifications, and other standards. 聽This class is FLSA nonexempt.

Electrical Controls Specialist II ($69,165.62 - $97,620.22 annually)
An Electrical Controls Specialist II performs skilled Electrical/Instrumentation installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair work related to electrical equipment up to 15kv and instrumentation equipment used to operate and monitor the City's water, wastewater, and gas systems. 聽Duties include: 聽installing, programming, calibrating, and commissioning various electrical/instrumentation devices, including variable frequency drives, level transmitters, flow meters, radios, and power monitoring equipment; interpreting electrical and electronic system designs, plans, specifications, wiring schematics, and basic one-line diagrams; assisting in the startup, commissioning, and troubleshooting of the process control system, including correcting problems with communications, field process variables, or design engineering; coordinating and acquiring materials and equipment to repair or install at facilities; acting as technical lead on new projects including new gas, water, wastewater facilities, pump stations, plants, etc.; reviewing drawings, plans, specifications, and submittals from the City's Engineering Department or a consultant for utility projects; enforcing compliance with City standards and technical specifications for utility projects; providing technical and inspection assistance to the City of Mesa Construction Inspectors; assisting Design Engineers or Engineering companies with design criteria for process controls and electrical distribution projects; performing calibration and verification for the Arizona Corporation Commission on gas regulator stations; certifying calibration for Inter-Agency flow meters; and creating, modifying, and updating AutoCAD and/or PDF drawings for new and existing projects. 聽This position will provide guidance and direction to Electrical Controls Specialist I's as needed and reviews their completed work for conformance and compliance with installation, maintenance, and repair specifications and standards. 聽Incumbents may be subject to call-out and must be willing to work overtime as required. 聽In addition, an incumbent may be subject to after-hours stand-by duty for emergency repairs and must be able to use independent judgement in decisions related to their duties. 聽An employee in this class is required to use appropriate safety equipment and follow safety procedures in accordance with OSHA and NFPA 70E. 聽This class performs related duties as required.聽
