Job Description

Human Rights Legal Officer — UNAMI, Baghdad

The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) Human Rights Office is recruiting a Legal Officer at the P-3 level to support human rights monitoring, reporting, and advocacy across Iraq. This position is based in Baghdad with travel to field offices in Erbil, Basra, Kirkuk, and other locations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor and report on human rights violations and abuses across Iraq
  • Conduct legal analysis of Iraqi legislation for compliance with international human rights standards
  • Engage with Iraqi government counterparts, the Iraqi High Commission for Human Rights, and civil society organizations
  • Support transitional justice and accountability mechanisms
  • Draft reports, briefing notes, and legal opinions for the Special Representative of the Secretary-General
  • Advise on international humanitarian law compliance in conflict-affected areas
  • Support capacity building for Iraqi judicial and law enforcement institutions

Requirements

  • Advanced university degree (LLM or equivalent) in international law, human rights law, or international humanitarian law
  • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience in human rights, rule of law, or international law
  • Experience working in conflict or post-conflict environments
  • Knowledge of the Iraqi legal system, constitution, and human rights framework
  • Fluency in English; Arabic language proficiency highly desirable
  • Experience with UN human rights mechanisms and treaty bodies
  • Strong analytical, research, and report writing skills
