Legislative Counsel

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Legislative Counsel based in Canada.

This role sits at the intersection of law, public policy, regulatory strategy, and a rapidly evolving digital marketplace. You’ll help interpret legislation and regulatory developments affecting gig economy platforms, marketplaces, labour practices, retailers, and consumers. Your legal analysis will support business teams in responding to emerging requirements while strengthening compliance frameworks and reducing operational risk. You’ll collaborate closely with Policy, Government Affairs, Operations, Product, and Communications teams to provide clear and actionable legal guidance. The role also involves working with external counsel, trade associations, and industry partners on broader regulatory initiatives. It offers an opportunity to develop expertise in emerging areas of law while helping shape practical strategies for navigating complex legislative environments.

Accountabilities:

• Analyze emerging legislation and regulatory developments affecting marketplace platforms, gig economy participants, labour practices, retailers, consumers, and related areas, translating legal developments into clear and actionable guidance for internal stakeholders.
• Partner with Policy, Government Affairs, Operations, Product, Communications, and other cross-functional teams to coordinate regulatory responses and establish consistent legal perspectives on legislative matters affecting business operations.
• Develop, implement, and document legal frameworks and compliance best practices that support adherence to evolving legislative and regulatory mandates across relevant areas of the business.
• Provide precise legal advice by synthesizing complex legislative updates, identifying potential operational implications, and helping business partners understand compliance requirements and associated risks.
• Manage relationships with external counsel, trade associations, and industry partners, supporting cross-industry initiatives and contributing legal perspectives to discussions around emerging regulatory standards.
• Build and maintain expertise in emerging areas of law relevant to digital marketplaces, gig economy platforms, and other highly regulated business models, sharing knowledge internally to strengthen organizational readiness.
• Monitor changes in the regulatory landscape and proactively identify legal and compliance considerations that may require new frameworks, processes, or strategic responses.

Requirements:

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree and 3+ years of professional legal practice experience, with a strong foundation in legislative, regulatory, compliance, or related legal matters.
• Demonstrated ability to synthesize, analyze, and communicate complex legislative updates while providing precise, practical, and actionable legal advice to business stakeholders.
• Experience working with legislative bodies, government agencies, regulatory matters, or other public-sector and policy-related environments.
• Proven experience supporting compliance initiatives and developing or executing legal frameworks designed to address legislative and regulatory requirements.
• Strong understanding of legislative processes and regulatory landscapes, with the ability to identify how changes may affect business operations and risk exposure.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain complex legal concepts clearly to both legal and non-legal audiences.
• Strong cross-functional collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively with policy, government affairs, operations, product, communications, and other stakeholders.
• Experience with legislative or regulatory strategy is preferred, particularly within marketplace platforms, gig economy businesses, or similarly highly regulated industries.

• Competitive Canadian Compensation: Base salary range of $185,000–$195,000 CAD, with compensation varying based on factors such as experience and skills required for the role.
