Job Description

Company Description

Fairness feels good

Make a real impact at AFCA. Where fairness drives every decision. Help us deliver world-class, independent complaints resolution for Australians. As a not-for-profit and progressive financial ombudsman, we’re championing positive change. Achieving our purpose takes progressive thinking, accountability and resilience. At AFCA, our inclusive leadership values every voice. We offer our people flexible work options, thoughtful benefits and opportunities to deepen expertise. Flourish in a diverse, caring culture. Feel the difference of belonging to an organisation intentionally designed to put people first.

Job Description

Help protect what matters most, people's information and their trust

At AFCA, we exist to resolve financial disputes fairly, independently and transparently and that means the personal information entrusted to us has to be handled with the same care and integrity we ask of the industry we oversee. We're looking for a Privacy Consultant to join our Office of the General Counsel and play a hands-on role in making that happen.

This is a great opportunity for someone early in their privacy career or coming from a records management, dispute resolution, financial services or health background, who wants to build genuine expertise in privacy law while working alongside experienced legal professionals.

What you'll be doing

Reporting into the Senior Privacy Manager & Counsel, you'll be right at the centre of how AFCA meets its obligations under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). Day to day, that means:

  • Handling privacy requests - reviewing and preparing AFCA's responses to access and correction requests under APPs 12 and 13, and keeping our privacy database accurate and up to date
  • Supporting compliance - researching privacy and data protection developments to help keep AFCA ahead of its statutory obligations
  • Managing incidents - assisting with the breach reporting register, remediation activities, and identifying trends or systemic issues
  • Delivering insights - collating data for privacy reporting, and helping spot patterns that matter
  • Building capability - helping design and roll out privacy training across the organisation
  • Engaging stakeholders -  liaising with teams across AFCA, and occasionally regulators and external law firms, to get things right

Qualifications

What you'll bring

  • Tertiary qualifications in law, or experience in privacy, or records management within dispute resolution, financial services or health
  • A solid grasp of privacy law fundamentals and genuine curiosity to go deeper
  • Sharp attention to detail and a track record of accurate, dependable record-keeping
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the confidence to liaise across teams
  • A cool head in a busy, fast-changing environment, without losing your customer focus
  • Discretion and integrity when handling confidential and sensitive information
  • Comfort with the Microsoft suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams), Adobe and Nitro
  • A self-starter mindset, happy working independently, just as comfortable collaborating

Nice to have: familiarity with ISO 27001, PCI DSS, FOI, or other information management frameworks, and exposure to compliance/risk frameworks.

Additional Information

  • Gold AWEI Accreditation 2025 – Recognised for LGBTQ+ workplace inclusion.
  • Accredited Family Friendly Workplace – Supporting work-life balance and inclusivity.
  • Hybrid working – Flexible arrangements with two days a week in our modern offices designed for collaboration and wellbeing.
  • Additional and inclusive leave options – Flexible public holidays, gender affirmation leave, women’s health leave, and bonus paid time off over the end of year holiday period.

To apply

If you’re passionate about fairness and believe your skills align with this role, we encourage you to apply even if you don’t meet every single criterion.

We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, cultures, abilities, sexual orientations, and gender identities. If you require any accessibility support during the recruitment process, please reach out to our team at Careers@afca.org.au.

We believe fairness starts with people. That’s why we don’t use AI or automated tools to screen candidates. As a result, our processes may take a little longer, and we thank you for your patience.
