Legal careers in Russia

Russia has a large legal market centred on Moscow and St Petersburg, with substantial in-house demand at banks, energy companies, telecoms and major domestic corporates, alongside litigation and advisory work. A distinctive feature is that general legal advice and most court representation can be done by anyone with a law degree, while the protected status of advocate (advokat) is needed mainly for criminal-defence representation. Following sanctions, much work has shifted to domestic firms and in-house teams.

Becoming a lawyer in Russia

Obtain a higher legal education (law degree) and gain the required legal work experience (generally at least two years) or complete a traineeship under a licensed advocate (typically one to two years). To become an advocate, apply to a regional advocates' chamber and pass the advocate qualification examination, after which you are granted advocate status, take the oath and are entered in the Unified State Register of Advocates. Representing clients in most civil and commercial matters does not require advocate status, but criminal-defence representation does.

How do I become a lawyer in Russia?

In Russia you first earn a higher legal education (a law degree). With that degree you can already give legal advice and represent clients in most civil and commercial court proceedings, since full advocate status is not required for that work. To become an advocate (advokat) you must gain the required legal experience (generally at least two years) or complete a traineeship under a licensed advocate, and then pass the advocate qualification examination set by a regional advocates' chamber, after which you take the oath, join the chamber and are entered in the Unified State Register of Advocates (created by the 2024 reform). Advocate status is particularly important because only advocates may act as defence counsel in criminal proceedings.

Who regulates lawyers in Russia?

The Federal Chamber of Advocates of the Russian Federation (Federalnaya palata advokatov, fparf.ru) and the regional advocates' chambers form the self-regulatory body for advocates, with mandatory membership; the Ministry of Justice oversees the system and maintains the Unified State Register of Advocates.
