To become a lawyer in Uganda you qualify as an Advocate. First earn a recognised LLB degree, then pass the Law Development Centre pre-entry examination (reinstated for 2025/2026). Next complete the Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice, known as the Bar Course, at the Law Development Centre, including its required field attachment/practical training. You are then enrolled as an Advocate of the High Court of Uganda by the Law Council and may join the Uganda Law Society.
Admission and discipline are overseen by the Law Council (established under the Advocates Act), while the Uganda Law Society is the statutory professional bar body. Vocational training is delivered by the Law Development Centre (LDC).
