Vatican City State is a tiny sovereign enclave with a very small, specialised legal community rather than a conventional jobs market. Legal work centres on two distinct systems: the civil courts of Vatican City State (which apply Vatican law and, subsidiarily, borrowed Italian law where compatible), and the ecclesiastical/canon-law tribunals of the Holy See such as the Tribunal of the Roman Rota and the Apostolic Signatura. Practitioners hold a degree in canon law (and, for the Rotal qualification, also civil law). Canonical advocates train in pontifical universities (such as the Gregorian or the Pontifical Lateran University) and, for Rotal practice, complete the Studio Rotale diploma at the Roman Rota and are enrolled in the Order of Advocates of the Roman Curia. To appear before the temporal (Vatican City State) courts a lawyer must be entered on the tribunal's official list and hold a degree in civil law.
