How do I become a lawyer in Belgium?

First obtain a Belgian master's degree in law, or have a foreign degree recognised (EU degrees can be admitted via an aptitude test). Register as a trainee (stagiaire) with a bar, either AVOCATS.BE or the Orde van Vlaamse Balies, and begin a 3-year supervised stage under an experienced patron; registration on the bar is automatic at the start of the stage. During the stage you complete the professional training and must pass the CAPA exam covering ethics, procedure and practice, and you take the oath before the Court of Appeal. After completing the stage and CAPA, you are inscribed on the bar's Tableau as a fully qualified avocat or advocaat.

Who regulates lawyers in Belgium?

Two community-level bar organisations regulate lawyers: AVOCATS.BE (Ordre des barreaux francophones et germanophone) for French- and German-speaking lawyers, and the Orde van Vlaamse Balies (OVB) for Dutch-speaking lawyers, alongside local bars such as the Brussels bars.
