Becoming a fully qualified advokat in the Czech Republic requires completing a structured path that typically takes eight to nine years from the start of law school to bar admission. The process is rigorous by design — the Czech Bar Association (Ceska advokatni komora, or CAK) maintains high standards to protect the quality of legal services. This guide walks through each stage in detail.

Step 1: Obtain a Law Degree (Mgr.)

The Czech Republic has four law faculties authorized to grant the Mgr. (Master's) degree in law, which is the prerequisite for all regulated legal professions:

Charles University, Faculty of Law (Prague)

Pravnicka fakulta Univerzity Karlovy is the oldest and most prestigious law school in the country, founded in 1348 as part of Central Europe's first university. Located in Prague's Stare Mesto near namesti Curieovych, the faculty admits approximately 600 students annually. Its alumni include many of the country's most prominent lawyers, judges, and politicians. The curriculum is taught entirely in Czech, though the faculty offers international exchange programs and some courses in English and German.

Masaryk University, Faculty of Law (Brno)

Pravnicka fakulta Masarykovy univerzity is widely regarded as the second-strongest law school. Founded in 1919, it benefits from Brno's status as the Czech judicial capital, providing students easy access to the Supreme Court, Constitutional Court, and Supreme Administrative Court. The faculty admits approximately 450 students per year and is known for strong programs in constitutional law, administrative law, and legal theory.

Palacky University, Faculty of Law (Olomouc)

Re-established in 1991 after being closed during the communist era, Palacky's law faculty has rebuilt a solid reputation. The faculty admits approximately 300 students annually and offers a collegial environment with smaller class sizes. Strong in civil law, European law, and human rights law.

University of West Bohemia, Faculty of Law (Plzen)

The newest Czech law faculty, established in 1993, has grown significantly in reputation. Located in Plzen (Pilsen), the faculty admits approximately 250 students per year. Known for practical-oriented legal education and strong connections with regional legal practitioners. Its proximity to Germany creates opportunities for German language legal training.

The law degree is a five-year integrated Mgr. program (no separate bachelor's and master's as in some European countries). Students study core subjects including civil law, criminal law, constitutional law, administrative law, international law, commercial law, labor law, and legal theory. The program concludes with a state examination (statni zkouska) and a thesis defense (diplomova prace).

Step 2: Complete the Koncipient Period (3 Years)

After obtaining the Mgr. degree, aspiring advokats must register with CAK as a koncipient (trainee lawyer) and complete a mandatory three-year training period under the supervision of a registered advokat. This is one of the defining features of Czech legal qualification.

What Koncipient Training Involves

  • Supervised practice: Working full-time under a registered advokat who serves as your skolitel (supervisor/mentor)
  • Client contact: Koncipienti interact directly with clients under supervision, drafting contracts, preparing court submissions, and attending hearings
  • CAK seminars: Mandatory attendance at continuing education seminars organized by the Czech Bar Association covering professional ethics, civil procedure, criminal procedure, and specialized topics
  • Duration: Exactly three years — no shortcuts or accelerated paths are available
  • Employment: Koncipienti are employed by their supervising advokat or law firm and receive a salary (see our salary guide for current ranges)

Finding a Koncipient Position

Competition for koncipient positions at top firms is intense. The best strategy is to begin building relationships during your studies through summer internships, legal clinics, and moot court competitions. Browse current koncipient openings on our Czech Republic internships page.

Step 3: Pass the Bar Examination (Advokatni Zkouska)

After completing the three-year koncipient period, candidates sit for the advokatni zkouska (bar examination) administered by CAK. The exam is considered one of the most challenging professional examinations in the Czech Republic.

Exam Structure

  • Written component: A full-day written examination testing the ability to draft legal documents, analyze case studies, and apply law to practical scenarios
  • Oral component: An oral examination before a panel of experienced advokats covering civil law, criminal law, commercial law, administrative law, EU law, and professional ethics
  • Pass rate: Approximately 70-80% on the first attempt — those who fail may retake after a waiting period

Exam Preparation

Most koncipienti prepare intensively during their third year of training. CAK offers preparatory courses, and several private providers run bar exam preparation programs. Study groups among koncipienti are common. Key study materials include the Komentare (comprehensive law commentaries) published by C.H. Beck, Wolters Kluwer, and Leges.

Step 4: Register as an Advokat

Upon passing the advokatni zkouska, successful candidates apply to CAK for registration as an advokat. Requirements for registration include:

  • Czech or EU/EEA citizenship (or recognized equivalent)
  • Full legal capacity
  • No criminal record
  • Completion of the Mgr. degree
  • Completion of the three-year koncipient period
  • Passing the advokatni zkouska
  • Professional liability insurance

Once registered, the advokat may practice independently, join a law firm as an associate, or establish their own practice.

Alternative Legal Career Paths

Not all Czech law graduates become advokats. Other regulated legal professions include:

  • Notar (Notary): Requires passing a separate notarial examination and being appointed by the Ministry of Justice. Notaries in the Czech Republic handle estate proceedings, authenticate documents, and provide legal consultations. Positions are limited by geographic quotas.
  • Soudce (Judge): Appointed by the President upon nomination by the Minister of Justice. Requires completing a judicial trainee period (justicni cekatel) and passing the judicial examination. The path typically takes 3-5 years after law school.
  • Statni zastupce (State Prosecutor): Appointed by the Minister of Justice after completing a legal trainee period at a prosecutor's office and passing the prosecutor's examination.
  • Exekutor (Judicial Enforcement Officer): A self-employed legal professional authorized to enforce court decisions. Requires a separate examination and appointment.
  • Podnikovy pravnik (Corporate Jurist): Does not require CAK registration — any Mgr. law graduate can work as an in-house corporate jurist without completing the koncipient period or bar exam. However, corporate jurists cannot represent clients in court or provide legal services to external parties.

Timeline Summary

  • Years 1-5: Mgr. law degree at Charles, Masaryk, Palacky, or West Bohemia university
  • Years 6-8: Koncipient period (mandatory 3 years under a registered advokat)
  • Year 8-9: Advokatni zkouska (bar examination) and CAK registration
  • Total: 8-9 years from enrollment to full qualification as an advokat
