How do I become a lawyer in Costa Rica?

To become a lawyer (abogado/abogada) in Costa Rica, you first complete the licenciatura en derecho (law degree) at a recognised university. You must then pass the Examen de Excelencia Academica para la Incorporacion administered by the Colegio de Abogados y Abogadas de Costa Rica, a mandatory multiple-choice exam (about 75 questions) testing substantive and procedural law and professional ethics, which requires a minimum score of 80 and is offered roughly three times a year. Pass rates are notoriously low. After passing the exam and submitting the required documentation, you are incorporated into the Colegio de Abogados, which is the legal precondition to practise and which then regulates your professional conduct.
