To become a lawyer in Finland, first earn a Master of Laws (oikeustieteen maisteri) from a Finnish university, or have a foreign law degree recognised as comparable by the Finnish National Agency for Education. With this degree you can already work as a lawyer (juristi) in firms, companies, the courts or government. To earn the protected title attorney-at-law (asianajaja), you must additionally be over 25, gain at least four years of legal experience (with at least two years related to attorney work), register with the Finnish Bar Association and pass the bar examination (covering written, ethics and trial parts). Only Finnish Bar Association members may call themselves asianajaja.
The Finnish Bar Association (Suomen Asianajajaliitto / Finlands Advokatforbund). It regulates the protected title 'attorney-at-law' (asianajaja); many qualified lawyers practise without Bar membership in other legal roles.
