To become a lawyer (dikigoros) in Greece you first complete a four-year law degree (Ptychio Nomikis) from a Greek law school or a recognised equivalent. You then register as a trainee lawyer (askoumenos dikigoros) with a local Bar Association and complete an 18-month traineeship under supervision. After the traineeship you sit the national bar examination, which has written and oral components covering civil, criminal and commercial law. Once you pass, you are sworn in and registered as a member of your local Bar Association, which is mandatory in order to practise; rights of audience before the appeal and supreme courts come with further years of practice.
Local Bar Associations (Dikigorikoi Syllogoi), such as the Athens Bar Association, regulate and admit lawyers; they are coordinated nationally through the Plenary of Greek Bar Associations (Olomeleia ton Dikigorikon Syllogon Ellados). Membership of a local bar is mandatory to practise.
