To become a lawyer in India you first earn a recognised law degree, either the 5-year integrated LLB taken after Class 12 (such as BA LLB or BBA LLB) or the 3-year LLB taken after another bachelor's degree, from an institution approved by the Bar Council of India. After graduating you enrol as an advocate with a State Bar Council. You then pass the All India Bar Examination (AIBE) conducted by the Bar Council of India to obtain your Certificate of Practice. Only after enrolment and clearing the AIBE may you practise law as an advocate before the courts.
The Bar Council of India (BCI) is the national statutory regulator under the Advocates Act, 1961; it sets standards for legal education and professional conduct, while the State Bar Councils handle enrolment of advocates in each state.
