Position Overview
Job Description
The Harris County Attorney’s Office seeks an attorney to join our Affirmative & Special Litigation Division, which represents the nation’s third largest county, its elected officials, and employees in state and federal courts. With a focus on complex, high impact matters in a variety of areas—including constitutional rights, consumer protection, elections, construction, and nuisances—our Division’s goal is to advance and protect, through civil litigation, the well-being, health, and safety of Harris County’s residents.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Takes on first and second chair litigation assignments to represent parties in civil litigation cases from intake through final judgment, including trials and/or appeals as needed.
- Manages all aspects of assigned litigation, such as drafting petitions and answers, issuing and responding to discovery, taking and defending depositions, and researching and drafting motions, including dispositive motions, and other necessary court documents.
- Participates in hearings, depositions, mediations, and trial.
- Advises, develops, and maintains relationships with clients (including elected officials, individual employees, and agency representatives), courts and court staff, the public, and other groups related to assigned cases.
- Performs multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining an effective balance of priorities and high productivity.
- Conducts research assignments and remains current on applicable caselaw and ethical obligations.
- Makes good use of technology and other legal tools.
- Responds promptly to phone calls, emails, and other correspondence.
- Participates in one-on-one sessions with the Managing Attorney and Division Directors to give and receive feedback.
- Participates in Division staff meetings and collaborative group settings.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
