USC’s Office of Athletic Compliance is seeking an Assistant Director, Athletic Compliance, to join its team.
The Assistant Director, Athletic Compliance plays an integral role in supporting USC’s comprehensive athletic compliance program. This position is responsible for monitoring, interpreting, analyzing, and evaluating athletic department activities to promote compliance with NCAA, conference, and university rules and regulations. The Assistant Director works collaboratively with athletics staff and university partners to help prevent, identify, and appropriately address potential compliance issues while fostering a culture of integrity and accountability.
This position will have a specific focus on NCAA Bylaws 13, 14, 15, and 16, including matters related to recruiting, academic and general eligibility, financial aid, and awards and benefits.
This position requires an on-site presence five days per week at USC’s University Park Campus in Los Angeles.
Job Accountabilities:
- Assists in planning and conducting quality assurance reviews of athletic compliance operations. Monitors playing and practice seasons, including coaching limitations, CARA, team travel, competition limits, season declarations, access policies, and football and basketball game-day activities. Reviews season declarations and team travel documentation for compliance and recommends changes to policies, procedures, and documentation as appropriate.
- Assesses and monitors recruiting activities, including official and unofficial visits by prospective student-athletes and guests, recruitment logs, and coaches’ phone records. Reviews official visit and recruiting documentation for compliance, follows up on coaching staff activities as needed, and recommends changes to policies, procedures, and documentation as appropriate.
- Assesses and monitors athletic camps and clinics involving athletic department staff, including employment, attendance, and other camp-related activities. Ensures appropriate documentation and recommends changes to policies, procedures, and documentation as appropriate.
- Assists in developing, implementing, and maintaining a comprehensive athletic compliance program by monitoring, interpreting, analyzing, and evaluating athletic department activities to ensure adherence to NCAA, conference, and university rules. Collaborates with athletic compliance directors on program design, objectives, and administration, including strategic planning, policy development and implementation, program development and evaluation, compliance assessment and interpretation, quality control, research, statistical analysis, needs assessment, and service delivery. Promotes a culture of integrity and ethical behavior.
- Participates in short- and long-range strategic planning under the direction of the Vice President for Athletic Compliance. Assists with integrating plans for specific athletic teams into overall strategies and collaborates with athletic compliance directors to develop program objectives and content.
- Participates in developing, updating, disseminating, interpreting, and applying athletic compliance rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Recommends operating and administrative policies, procedures, and exceptions.
- Researches and identifies trends and needs to help establish program direction in collaboration with athletic program directors. Evaluates, recommends, and implements data management and quality control procedures; performs statistical analyses; interprets results; and prepares management reports, including tables and graphs.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of athletic compliance program content and services. Recommends and implements modifications to support program goals and objectives and improve service delivery.
- Identifies risks and responds to compliance issues, problems, and concerns in collaboration with athletic compliance directors. Assists in determining whether actions by athletic department personnel, student-athletes, parents, boosters, alumni, volunteers, and third parties are permissible under conference and university rules. Meets with concerned parties, determines appropriate courses of action, and resolves referred issues and questions.
- Assists athletic compliance directors assigned to specific teams with NCAA and conference submissions, including violation reports and waivers, and with the dissemination, interpretation, and application of compliance rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Assists in analyzing and responding to interpretive requests.
- Provides consultation to coaches, athletic department staff, and university staff regarding NCAA, conference, and university rules. Exchanges information with coaches, athletic personnel, compliance staff, student-athletes, and parents; coordinates services with campus offices and staff; serves as a key program resource; and develops information systems to monitor and evaluate compliance and support program operations.
- Maintains current knowledge of and assists with compliance with university, NCAA, and conference rules. Stays informed of developments in the field, reviews relevant literature, and participates in administrative meetings with athletic compliance staff and athletic department representatives.
- Leads special projects and directs the planning and delivery of services and activities, as requested. Schedules and assigns workloads, establishes priorities and deadlines, allocates resources, and provides leadership and guidance to staff and student workers. Develops and conducts program-focused training and assesses trainee proficiency or readiness as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree
- 2 years of experience
- Directly related professional experience dealing with an athletic compliance program and rules/regulatory issues. Working knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills to deal effectively and tactfully with people at all levels.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Demonstrated strong planning and critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (JD) or Master's Degree
- 3 years of experience
The annual base salary range for this position is $80,000 - $88,500.00. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
