Job Description

Director, Assistant General Counsel - Global Payment Network, Network Participant Risk

The Capital One Legal Department is an outstanding team at a Fortune 100 Company that is consistently voted one of the best places to work in the U.S. You will find that the Legal Department is not a “check the box” function, but instead an important voice and strategic partner in all aspects of the business. You will be a part of a collaborative environment that values your insight, encourages you to take on new responsibility, promotes continuous learning, and rewards innovation and intellectual curiosity.

We are looking for an experienced and collaborative legal leader to join our growing Global Payment Network Legal team. In this role, you will advise on the various legal risks inherent in the Global Payment Network’s relationships with its network participants, including issuers, acquirers, and network alliances.

About the Role:

The attorney will be responsible for collaborating with various stakeholders on Global Payment Network business and risk teams and other second line of defense teams to identify and assess legal risks and problem-solve complex issues. The ideal candidate should have expertise in financial services and risk management.

This position will have responsibility for:

  • Providing strategic, clear, and conceptualized legal advice on a variety of complex issues and topics in the network participant risk space, including fraud, high brand risk, and network participant oversight.

  • Translating applicable laws, regulations, and legal requirements into actionable advice.

  • Developing and maintaining participant-facing rules and commercial terms to best mitigate risk in a fluid legal and regulatory environment.

  • Advising on the rollout of products, communications, processes and procedures necessary to support the well-managed execution of business priorities.

  • Managing external counsel as necessary, and building relationships and collaborating with Legal Department subject matter experts, senior business partners, and stakeholders across Capital One.

  • Coordinating legal presentations and strategic communications regarding network participant risks for senior audiences including legal and business executives, regulators, and policymakers.

The successful candidate will have the following:

  • Top tier smarts and analytical skills

  • Ability to understand complex topics quickly with depth that allows for concise and simple advice

  • Problem solving mentality rather than thinking only like a legal technician

  • Excellent judgment with the ability to predict long-term consequences

  • Growth mindset with an openness to new ideas, diverse perspectives, and unconventional solutions

  • Strong people skills - we’re looking for someone who can build collegial and effective relationships with colleagues and clients

  • Ownership mentality, thinking like an owner vs. an employee

  • Solid time management skills with the ability to prioritize a significant volume of work and to manage multiple deadlines

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence others and write concisely

Basic Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school

  • Active member in good standing of at least one state bar

  • At least 8 years of experience as an attorney in a law firm environment, at a government agency, as a military judge advocate, or as in-house counsel

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of experience in a law firm environment, at a government agency, as a military judge advocate, or as in-house counsel

  • 5+ years experience in financial services
