GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

We are seeking highly motivated, organized, and professional applicants for a legal assistant/paralegal position with the School Finance Litigation Division. The primary role of this position is to assist the attorneys assigned to represent the State of Wyoming in school funding matters, including the defense of the state's K-12 funding system when subject to challenge through litigation. The division advises the Governor, Legislature, and education agencies on the legal aspects of funding schools for Wyoming's children. The division is involved in the modification, implementation, and maintenance of the public school finance system, including recalibration of the school funding model.
As a secondary role, the applicant for this position will also assist as available and as needed to provide legal support for the Tort Litigation Division in its defense of civil lawsuits against the state, its officers and employees, and all state and local peace officers.
Responsibilities of this position are those typical of a legal assistant/paralegal, including legal research, drafting and editing legal documents and correspondence, maintaining case files and records, reviewing and summarizing case materials, and assisting with case management logistics and discovery. Other responsibilities include assistance with case development, investigation, client communications, and assisting attorneys at trial. The paralegal hired for this position will be expected to take on a wide array of tasks for multiple attorneys with strict internal and external deadlines.

- Legal research and background investigation of matters as requested by attorneys.
- Preparing initial drafts and revising, proofreading, and editing legal documents, including contracts, pleadings, motions, and other court documents.
- Filing of legal documents with various courts, including electronic filing and service where necessary.
- Case opening and closing, including client and witness interviews, correspondence, and managing case calendars.
- Assisting with the administration of established strategies and goals.
- Use of proper citation in all legal documents as specified in The Bluebook: A Uniform System of Citation.
- Assisting attorneys in preparing for and conducting hearings, trials, and meetings.
- Compiling, summarizing, and organizing information necessary for reports and case development.
- Consistently demonstrating analytical ability, administrative skills, ingenuity, and independent judgment.
