Legal careers in Lebanon

Lebanon is a civil-law jurisdiction (with strong French legal influence) and a historically important regional legal market centred on Beirut, despite severe economic strain since 2019. Lawyers work in private firms (commercial, banking, arbitration and litigation), in-house roles, and a large UN, INGO and donor sector handling refugee response, human rights and rule-of-law work. Two bar associations operate, in Beirut and Tripoli.

Becoming a lawyer in Lebanon

A candidate (typically a Lebanese citizen) holds a Lebanese law degree, then registers as a trainee lawyer with the relevant bar association after passing the affiliation exam for the trainee roll. They complete a three-year traineeship in a practising lawyer's office and pass the Bar's written and oral examinations. On passing, they are admitted to the General Roll and may practise before the Lebanese courts.
