To become an advocate in Malta you complete the law programme at the University of Malta, culminating in the qualifying postgraduate qualification (the Master in Advocacy, which replaced the older LL.D.). You must complete a period working in the office of a practising advocate and attending court sittings, and demonstrate full knowledge of the Maltese language. You then pass the warrant examination (held in Maltese, in written and oral parts), after which the President of Malta grants you the warrant to practise under the Public Seal. Finally you take the oath of office before the Court of Appeal; the Chamber of Advocates is the profession's representative body.
Advocates are admitted by warrant granted by the President of Malta under the Public Seal, on the recommendation of the courts; the Chamber of Advocates (Kamra tal-Avukati) is the self-regulatory professional body, and the Commission for the Administration of Justice oversees the profession.
