How do I become a lawyer in Mauritius?

To become a lawyer in Mauritius, you first earn a qualifying law degree (commonly an LLB (Hons) at the required classification, or an accepted equivalent). You then gain admission to the Law Practitioners Vocational Course (LPVC), governed by the Council of Legal Education and delivered at the University of Mauritius, which prepares you for one of the three branches: barrister, attorney or notary. You sit and pass the professional examinations set by the Vocational Examinations Board and satisfy the Law Practitioners Act requirements. You are then admitted by the Supreme Court to practise in your chosen stream; those called to the Bar also complete a period of pupillage.

Who regulates lawyers in Mauritius?

The Council of Legal Education (which governs the Law Practitioners Vocational Course and the professional examinations, operating under the Supreme Court) oversees professional qualification, with admission ultimately by the Supreme Court of Mauritius; the Mauritius Bar Association, the Law Society and the Chamber of Notaries are the professional bodies for the three branches.
