To become a lawyer in Papua New Guinea, first complete a Bachelor of Laws (LLB), usually at the University of Papua New Guinea School of Law. You then complete the practical legal training course at the Legal Training Institute (LTI), which lasts roughly nine months. Once you hold the LTI certificate and satisfy the fit-and-proper requirements, you apply to the National Court for admission to practise. After admission you must be a member of the Papua New Guinea Law Society and hold a practising certificate it issues; a restricted certificate lets you work as an employee lawyer, while an unrestricted certificate (allowing solo practice and holding client trust money) requires a further period of supervised practice.
