How do I become a lawyer in Vanuatu?

To become a lawyer in Vanuatu, obtain a recognised law degree, commonly the LLB from the University of the South Pacific's School of Law in Port Vila, and meet the training requirements in the Legal Practitioners (Qualifications) Regulations 1996. You then apply to the Admissions Committee of the Law Council. Exercising its powers under the Legal Practitioners Act [Cap 119], the Law Council admits qualified, fit-and-proper applicants to practise. Practitioners are represented by the Vanuatu Law Society (which does not itself control admission); foreign lawyers must satisfy the same admission and registration requirements.

Who regulates lawyers in Vanuatu?

Admission and practice are regulated by the Law Council, which exercises its admission powers under the Legal Practitioners Act [Cap 119] and the Legal Practitioners (Qualifications) Regulations No 22 of 1996; the Council includes the Chief Justice, the Attorney General and an appointed legal practitioner, and operates an Admissions Committee. The Vanuatu Law Society represents practitioners. (A Legal Profession Act No. 49 of 2005 was passed, but current admission practice continues to be administered under the Cap 119 framework.)
