To become a lawyer (bengoshi) in Japan, you typically complete an undergraduate degree followed by an accredited graduate law school, or instead pass the preliminary examination (yobi-shiken). You then pass the National Bar Examination (shiho shiken), one of the country's most competitive exams. After passing, you undertake about one year of practical training (apprenticeship) at the Supreme Court's Legal Training and Research Institute and pass its final examination. Finally, you register with a local bar association affiliated with the Japan Federation of Bar Associations to be licensed to practise.
