To become a lawyer (advocate) in Nepal you first complete a recognised law degree, an LLB or a five-year BALLB, from a recognised university; foreign-qualified candidates must obtain an equivalence certificate. You then apply to the Nepal Bar Council, the statutory regulator established under the Nepal Bar Council Act 1993, and sit the Advocate License Examination, which has two written papers covering law, legal drafting and translation, plus an internship and an oral interview. You must score at least 50 percent on each paper and pass the interview to qualify. After passing you register with the Council, take an oath and receive your licence and certificate number, which is what allows you to represent clients and argue cases in Nepal's courts. Note the Nepal Bar Council (regulator) is distinct from the Nepal Bar Association (the lawyers' representative body).
Nepal Bar Council (nepalbarcouncil.org.np), the statutory regulator established under the Nepal Bar Council Act 1993, governs admission, licensing and discipline of advocates; the Nepal Bar Association is the separate voluntary professional/representative body.
