To become a lawyer (advogado) in Portugal you complete a law degree (a master's-level qualification is generally required for access today; check the rule for your cohort). You then register with the Ordem dos Advogados as a trainee (advogado estagiario) and undertake the estagio, an 18-month traineeship (a 6-month phase followed by a 12-month phase) combining bar-organized coursework with supervised practice under a patrono. You then pass the final evaluation and aggregation exam administered by the Ordem dos Advogados. On passing you obtain definitive registration with the bar as an advogado and hold the professional card (cedula profissional), which authorizes you to practise.
The Ordem dos Advogados (Portuguese Bar Association) is the national regulator for lawyers (advogados); the separate profession of solicitadores is regulated by the Ordem dos Solicitadores e Agentes de Execucao (OSAE).
