How these numbers were produced, and what they cannot tell you.

Source
Salary ranges published by employers in live job listings on LegalAlphabet. This is observed advertised pay, not a survey and not an estimate model.
Sample
45 active listings quoting a salary in GBP.
Normalisation
Every figure is converted to an annual equivalent before comparison: monthly pay x 12, hourly pay x 2,080 (40 hours x 52 weeks). Where a listing gives a range, we use its midpoint.
Headline statistic
The median, not the mean. A small number of very large offers (partner track, senior in-house) pulls the average well above what a typical role pays, so the median is the more honest single number. Quartiles are published alongside it so the spread stays visible.
Minimum group size
A breakdown row is only published when it has at least 10 listings behind it. Smaller groups are withheld rather than shown as noise.
Refresh
Recomputed from live inventory on every page load. Expired listings leave the sample automatically, so the figures track the current market rather than a fixed survey date.
Known limits
  • Advertised pay is not paid pay. These are the ranges employers publish to attract applicants. Actual offers, bonuses and equity are not captured.
  • Seniority labels are employer-supplied and inconsistent. Some senior roles are posted under junior tags, which inflates the lower experience bands. Treat the experience breakdown as indicative, and the practice-area and employer-type cuts as the more reliable ones.
  • Listings that quote no salary are excluded entirely. Employers who publish pay may not represent those who do not, and pay-transparency laws make published ranges more common in some jurisdictions than others.
  • Broad practice categories absorb a lot. A large share of listings fall into a general category rather than a named specialism, so specialism medians describe the listings that were clearly tagged, not the whole market.

Factors That Affect Legal Salaries

📍
Country & City
Location is the biggest factor. A corporate lawyer in New York earns vastly more than one in Nairobi.
⚖️
Practice Area
M&A, capital markets, and tech law command premium salaries. Public interest pays less but offers stability.
📈
Experience (PQE)
Entry-level associates earn 40-60% less than senior counsel. The jump to partner is the biggest leap.
🏢
Employer Type
Large international firms pay 30-50% more than boutique practices. In-house roles offer better work-life balance.
