To become a lawyer (luat su) in Vietnam you first earn a Bachelor of Laws degree from a recognized university. You then complete a lawyer training course (about 12 months) at the Judicial Academy, followed by an apprenticeship (tap su) of roughly 18 months at a law firm under a qualified supervising lawyer. You pass the qualifying examination, obtain a lawyer's practising certificate (chung chi hanh nghe luat su) from the Ministry of Justice, and register with a provincial or city bar association. Lawyers are regulated by the Vietnam Bar Federation under the Law on Lawyers.
