How do I become a lawyer in Tanzania?

To become an advocate in Tanzania (Mainland), first earn an LLB from a recognised university. Then complete the compulsory practical legal training programme at the Law School of Tanzania. You must satisfy the oral interview/examination before the panel of the Council for Legal Education, then petition the Chief Justice for admission, after which you are sworn in and enrolled as an Advocate of the High Court. To practise, you must be a member of the Tanganyika Law Society, which regulates advocates under the Advocates Act. (Zanzibar has its own separate admission regime.)

The Tanganyika Law Society (TLS), founded in 1954, is the bar association of Tanzania Mainland and regulates advocates under the Advocates Act (Cap 341) and the Tanganyika Law Society Act (Cap 307); membership is compulsory for practising advocates.
